The Budapest Crazy Ass Criterium

Stage 5 of the 2021 Tour de Hongrie
Urban Racing
The final stage of the 42nd edition of the Tour de Hongrie raced through the streets of the capitol city Budapest. Aggressive racing in close quarters.

In this shot, Marco Frapporti is informing his teammate Simone Bevilacqua that he will be squeezing by on the inside of this long sweeping and very fast corner.

Young & Ambitious

For many cyclists, the UCI Europe Tour is the path to the big time cycling. Most of the teams represented have several squads racing at different levels, so a good ride here may get the attention of the team's directeur sportif and a bib number in a Grand Tour. This hope of glory nourishes good racing as the riders cannot afford to squander any opportunities. The races are fast, aggressive and very entertaining for the spectators.

During this giant criterium in Budapest, many riders attempted to build a break and seperate themselves from the pack. They all failed.

The Riders

Meet János Pelikán

He was the fastest local in this year's race, hence the white jersey. He joined the Italian team Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec for the 2020 season, hoping to participate in the Giro which was scheduled to begin in Budapest. Covid-19 had different plans though, the race was postponed and the Giro start in Budapest abandoned.

After this final stage of the TdH in Budapest, János was asking his directeur sportif where the next start will be. He was instructed to call-in around Wednesday. Racing at this level is tough. Maybe he was given a start, maybe not. Nonetheless, János left with his hopes high as his landsman Attila Valter just spent the last two days racing in the Maglia Rosa. After this photo was made he climbed onto his bike and rode home to have dinner with his family.

All Five Stages of the 2021 Tour de Hongrie

Budapest was the fifth and final stage of the Tour, but of course the other stages also offered a lot of action. This photoset displays images from all five stages.

Send Me a Note

Let's make some pictures of your team.

My photography style demands that I get very close to the action. If your event allows this access, then I can get the shots you need to promote your team's success. I also enjoy embedding myself into teams, allowing me to make photographs not only of the racing but behind the scenes as well. Tell me what you need, maybe I can help you out. I only cover events in Central Europe (HU, SK, CZ, RO, BG, PL) and the Balkans.

I am a member of the Association Internationale des Journalistes du Cyclisme.
